ACCEPTER le v茅lo : Findings and perspectives from two years of research

Published: 5 November 2025

The ACCEPTER le v茅lo conference brought together researchers and policymakers to discuss the evolving landscape of cycling in Montreal and beyond. The first panel highlighted major progress in cycling infrastructure between 2018 and 2023, showing strong links between high-comfort networks and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Presenters also emphasized that infrastructure alone is not enough鈥攗nderstanding behavioural stages and psychological motivators is essential to encourage more residents to cycle. Findings indicated that one-third of Montrealers are interested but not yet active cyclists, suggesting significant potential for growth through targeted behavioural and infrastructural interventions.

The second and third panels examined social acceptance, communication strategies, and policy implementation to foster cycling culture. Research by Dr. J茅r么me Laviolette and Lexi Kinman revealed that public support for cycling infrastructure depends heavily on framing and moral values, with recommendations to broaden messaging beyond environmental and fairness appeals. Additional studies explored the impact of winter cycling policies in Sherbrooke, qualitative insights on barriers to cycling, and longitudinal data from Montreal and Laval showing reduced car use and increased perceptions of safety. Keynote speaker Dr. Meghan Winters concluded by stressing the importance of integrating data-driven research with open dialogue to inform effective urban planning and transportation policies.
