A t\neach session\, one member will lead the discussion of a book they\nreco mmended and which was agreed upon by the group.\nDaniel Quinn ('Dreamer') won the Turner Tomorrow Award's\nhalf-million-dollar first prize for this fascinating and odd book -\nnot a novel by any conventional definition - w hich was written 13\nyears ago but could not find a publisher. The unnamed narrator is a\ndisillusioned modern writer who answers a personal ad ('Te acher\nseeks pupil. . . . Apply in person.') and thereby meets a wise\,\nl earned gorilla named Ishmael that can communicate telepathically.\nThe bul k of the book consists entirely of philosophical dialogues\nbetween gorill a and man\, on the model of Plato's Republic.\n\nThrough Ishmael\, Quinn o ffers a wide-ranging if highly\ngeneral examination of the history of our civilization\,\nilluminating the assumptions and philosophies at the heart of many\nglobal problems. Despite some gross oversimplifications\, Quinn' s\nideas are fairly convincing\; it's hard not to agree that\nunrestrained population growth and an obsession with conquest and\ncontrol of the envi ronment are among the key issues of our times.\nQuinn also traces these pr oblems back to the agricultural\nrevolution and offers a provocative rerea ding of the biblical\nstories of Genesis. Though hardly any plot to speak of lies behind\nthis long dialogue\, Quinn's smooth style and his intrigui ng\nproposals should hold the attention of readers interested in the\ndaun ting dilemmas that beset our planet.\n DTSTART:20081029T230000Z DTEND:20081029T230000Z LOCATION:CA\, Home of a Portland Alum\, Home of a Portland Alum\, Details u pon registration\, Portland\, Oregon SUMMARY:Alumni Association of Oregon presents 'Portland ºÚÁÏÉç Reads: 'Ishm ael\; An Adventure of the Mind and Spirit' ' URL:/channels/event/alumni-association-oregon-presents -portland-mcgill-reads-ishmael-adventure-mind-and-spirit-102396 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
