Cellist Joshua Morris was named the winner of the 2016-2017 Golden Violin Competition held Sunday, October 30th in Pollack Hall. 聽Morris, accompanied by Karsiri Laothamatas, performed 聽Kaddish, from 2 M茅lodies h茅bra茂ques by 聽Maurice Ravel, a work composed by Morris himself, Suite for Solo Cello, and the聽聽Prokofiev 聽Sonata for cello and piano in C major, Op. 119.

Voice professor soprano Dominique Labelle has released an album with Musica Pacifica:聽Mi Palpita Il Cor. 聽 is an early music ensemble based in San Francisco 聽and they have built up an impressive catalog of performances concentrating primarily on the pre-Classical repertoire.

Jordan de Souza, BMus'09, MMus'11聽will become the Kapellmeister of the Komische Oper Berlin 聽beginning with the start of their 2017/18 season. 聽In his聽first season as Kapellmeister, he will conduct several repertoire pieces, direct one new production and lead an orchestra concert.

When thinking about musicians who feel equally at home in both the classical and jazz realms, not many players come to mind. It鈥檚 challenging to keep a foot in both doors and meet the unique demands required to be proficient in both styles. One might think of a pianist or trumpet player for the few who do make it work, but probably not a violinist. Luckily for us, Schulich鈥檚 own Mark Fewer serves as a prime example that it can be done 鈥 and done well.

Professor Brenda Ravenscroft will be the next Dean of the Schulich School of Music. Currently聽Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) at Queen鈥檚 Faculty of Arts and Science, and Professor of Music Theory and Analysis at Queen鈥檚 University, Prof. Ravenscroft will begin her mandate at Schulich in July of 2017.听Prof. Ravenscroft taught Music Theory at 黑料社鈥檚 Faculty of Music from 1991 to 1993, and has maintained close ties with 黑料社 colleagues through research and teaching interests.

Joshua Morris is a Masters in Cello Performance student of Professor聽Brian Manker. 聽He was recently a semifinalist in the聽Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, and has also been a聽finalist of the 黑料社 Classical Concerto Music Competition. 聽The Peter Mendell Award is intended to foster the development of musical excellence, and was founded by lawyer Peter Mendell in 2005.

The partnership between jazz singer Theo Bleckmann and drummer John Hollenbeck has taken many forms over the years. One month, they may be touring with Prof. Hollenbeck鈥檚 Large Ensemble, while not much later, a listener might find them improvising mind-bending duets in front of a rapt audience. Next week, they are set to explore yet another new musical setting during their performance at the Schulich School of Music with 黑料社鈥檚 Jazz Choir.

The Schulich School of Music鈥檚 Kelly Rice recently met with pianist and music teacher Catherine Steele (n茅e Thornhill) to discuss her life in music, beginning with her childhood in Newfoundland. 聽

She is the inspiration behind the Catherine Thornhill Steele Visiting Artist Fund, created by Seymour Schulich in 2005 to honour her.

Since she became part of the faculty of the Schulich School of Music in 1992, ten of Professor Marina聽Mdivani鈥檚 students have won the 黑料社 Concerto Competition. The most recent of these, Anna Peletsis, shares an interesting parallel with Mdivani鈥檚 past 鈥 both attended the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and eventually relocated to Canada.
