Harnessing data for impact: A conversation with MMA Online graduate Hari Gopalan (MMA鈥25)

As part of the first graduating cohort of 黑料社鈥檚 Master of Management in Analytics (Online) program, Hari Gopalan (MMA鈥25) has already begun applying his learnings to improve healthcare systems and patient outcomes. Based in Ottawa, Hari works as a Quality Improvement Advisor (QIA) at the Children鈥檚 Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), supporting Medical Imaging and Ambulatory Care.

鈥淚 started my healthcare journey in Radiology before I was given the opportunity to do a fellowship in Quality Improvement,鈥 Hari explains. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 when I was introduced to the power of data and insights, and how they drive transformation in the hospital system. Now I use data as part of my daily toolkit to advise and advocate for improvements.鈥

What motivated you to enroll in the Master of Management in Analytics (Online) program at 黑料社?

When I started my role as a QIA, I had to re-teach myself statistics that I hadn鈥檛 touched since high school. I quickly learned that the marriage of qualitative and quantitative insights helps tell a story that resonates across the organization.

Although I had the skills to perform my day-to-day tasks, I knew there was more I could be doing. Around that time, I started seeing ads for the MMA Online program, and it felt like exactly what I needed to take the next step in my professional development.

How has completing the program influenced your career path and professional opportunities so far?

I began seeing a return on investment from day one. From using a simple optimizer to map out the optimal ratio of exams to exam slots, to developing forecasting models that predict the impact of improvement efforts on waitlists鈥攖he program was immediately applicable. The MMA felt additive, allowing me to build on my subject matter expertise to drive meaningful change and transformation.

What was the most valuable insight or takeaway from your time in the program?

There are so many tools and technologies out there, but ultimately, analytics is about problem-solving with the aid of technology. The program gave me the ability and confidence to learn things that are new and complex. Even if I don鈥檛 know the exact steps to solving a problem, I now have the mindset and tools to find a solution, whether through Python, online resources, peers, or using GenAI to support the production of usable code.

How has the program shaped the way you approach data-driven decision-making in your work today?

Data has always been the cornerstone of my work, but now I feel much more confident about what data to use and which metrics truly advance the story I鈥檓 trying to tell.

How did the program help you expand your professional or personal network?

I鈥檝e met so many great minds in the program, from the federal government to high tech. Working with such brilliant classmates has been inspiring.

The alumni network is also very active, offering opportunities to connect through various mixers and a dedicated online group where job and internship postings are regularly shared. As the MMA Online program continues to grow, I see this network becoming even stronger.

Why would you recommend the Master of Management in Analytics (Online) program to other professionals?

The MMA is a catalyst that enhances your subject matter expertise with the skills of the future. The faculty bring together academic and industry experience, giving you an appreciation for both the fundamentals and the state of the art.

The program is challenging, and your return on investment is proportional to the effort you put in. If you see yourself as a leader of tomorrow, the MMA might just be the right choice for you.
