Engaging with Paradox in Bean-to-bar Chocolate Entrepreneurship \n\nDate: Friday October 25\, 2024\n Time: 10:30 AM -12:00 PM\n Location: Vi rtual\n\nJoin ZOOM\n\n\n All are cordially invited to attend.\n\n\n\nAbstra ct:\n\nWe investigate how US bean-to-bar craft chocolate entrepreneurs per ceive and engage with craft entrepreneurship’s fundamental paradoxes\, the conflicting yet connected concerns that stem from tensions between the cr aft ethos and entrepreneurial imperatives. Through a qualitative analysis of 79 interviews with founders and executives\, three salient paradoxes em erge: identity\, industrialization\, and intention. We find that most entr epreneurs engage in paradoxical thinking\, holding craft ideals and entrep reneurial imperatives in tension. Comparing the degree to which our subjec ts engage in paradoxical thinking across sets of tensions\, we derive thre e paradox-engagement archetypes. Finally\, we find that most craft entrepr eneurs design their organizations to act as a guardrail\, allowing them to engage with both craft and entrepreneurial logics by forestalling opportu nities for external stakeholders to exert market-related pressures. Our fi ndings show that entrepreneurs can successfully engage with craft entrepre neurial paradoxes\, building sustainable ventures without abandoning their ideals.\n DTSTART:20241025T143000Z DTEND:20241025T160000Z SUMMARY:Organizational Behavior Area Virtual Research Seminar Series: Jo-El len Pozner URL:/desautels/channels/event/organizational-behavior- area-virtual-research-seminar-series-jo-ellen-pozner-360516 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
