Our analysis exploits the large heterogeneity in the early composition of English and Welsh cities. We fi rst extract built-up clusters from early historical maps\, identify (small and large) settlements at the onset of the nineteenth century\, and isola te exogenous variation in the nature of their rise during the transformati on of the economy up to the end of the nineteenth century. We then estimat e the causal impact at the city-level of the early growth and specializati on on the later dynamics of cities: Cities which specialize in a few indus tries experience a decline in the long run. We develop a dynamic spatial m odel of cities to isolate the forces which govern their life and death. In a static setting\, the model captures the role of land\, local productivi ty\, and (internal and external) trade in explaining the allocation of eco nomic activity across industries and cities. Intertemporally\, the model d isentangles the role of aggregate industry dynamics from city-specific ext ernalities. We find that the long-run dynamics of English and Welsh cities is explained to a large extent by such dynamic externalities a la Jacobs. \n DTSTART:20221125T203000Z DTEND:20221125T220000Z LOCATION:Room 429\, Leacock Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 2T7\, 855 r ue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:David Nagy (CREI)\, 'The Death and Life of Great British Cities' URL:/economics/channels/event/david-nagy-crei-death-an d-life-great-british-cities-340870 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
