 ter gatherers were being killed and pushed from their lands\, and their ch
 ildren were frequently trafficked in the regions beyond the Cape Colony ar
 ound the Gariep River. This was the result of migrants of various kinds fl
 ooding into their area and of conflict exploding over resources in a time 
 of political upheaval and drought. Missionaries of the London Missionary S
 ociety\, often recently arrived themselves and frequently ill-informed\, s
 ent back to their home societies long personal diaries as well as more off
 icial reports that referenced these processes. Such sources are among the 
 few remaining written records from this time and place. What can these pap
 ers reveal about the complex dynamics of the period? How should we read th
 e papers of missionaries\, both inadvertent witnesses to violent transform
