A ccording to this theory\, racism is rooted in both institutions and system s that tend to reproduce patterns based on racial prejudice. CRT argues th at racism cannot be seen as a defect of individuals. Rather\, racism is ro oted in power structures. CRT offers a critique of the knowledge that has long excluded Black voices.   \n\nThis theory\, developed by Black legal s cholars\, also challenges the neutrality of the law and the legal system. In particular\, it recognizes the ways in which laws and their interpretat ion support racial hierarchies. The ultimate goal:  to transform the legal and judicial system so that it becomes truly egalitarian. \n\nWith CRT in mind\, we will examine some of the works of Basquiat (Irony of Negro Poli ceman and Defacement) a contemporary of CRT theorists to expose issues of social justice. Manuel Mathieu\, as a black artist in White Spaces\, will share his experience in order to open up a reading of the social context n ot only of the 1980s\, but of the 21st century. \n\nTheory. Art. This disc ussion will be an opportunity to think differently about the arts and the social construct of race.\n\nFind the works that will be discussed attache d.\n\nManuel Mathieu\n\nMontreal-based multidisciplinary artist Manuel Mat hieu is known for his paintings which explore themes of historical violenc e\, erasure\, and the physicality of Haitian visual culture\, nature\, and symbolism. \n\nMarrying abstract and figurative techniques\, his composit ions allow us to reflect on Haiti's transformative history while inviting us to consider the different futures created by the act of remembering. \n \nDrawing from a wide range of genres\, Manuel's practice combines his Hai tian heritage with his formal art education\, which culminated in an MFA a t Goldsmiths\, University of London. \n\nMe Tamara Thermitus\, Ad.E: \n\nM s. He passed away at the age of 27\, crossing the art scene like a shoo ting star. This self-taught painter adopted graffiti before committing to painting. Basquiat is now recognized as one of the most important contempo rary painters and his unique work continues to fascinate. \n\nHis iconic w orks contain enigmatic words\, symbols\, and diagrams\, as well as iconogr aphy including skulls\, masks\, and the artist's signature crown. In his w ork\, Basquiat draws on his own Caribbean heritage\, a convergence of Hait ian\, African American and African cultural histories. His work is marked by both classical themes and protagonists of popular culture\, including a thletes and musicians.  \n\nThe immediacy and intellectual depth of his pa intings have earned him widespread recognition. Basquiat's paintings are n ow in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art\, the Museum of Contempo rary Art in Los Angeles\, the Whitney Museum of American Art\, and the Met ropolitan Museum of Art\, among others.  \n\nIn 2017\, Basquiat's Untitled (1982) was sold at auction for $110.5 million USD\, making it the most ex pensive work of art by an American artist ever sold. \n DTSTART:20221027T220000Z DTEND:20221027T233000Z LOCATION:New Chancellor Day Hall\, Maxwell Cohen Moot Court.
