Towards a New Sexual Contract: Feminist Reflections on the Industry of Female Desire in Spain

Abstract:聽This talk offers a critical analysis of the female desire industry and its transformation in contexts where women assume the role of consumers. It examines the processes of sanitization, domestication, and elitization within this industry, as well as female imaginaries and experiences of sexuality, transgression, and consumption. The analysis focuses on the fantasies sustained by and for male providers, who present themselves through archetypes such as the gallant, the dominant, and the therapist, thereby embodying different forms of masculinity in the provision of heterosexual services. Particular attention is given to heteronormativity and the performative staging of heterosexuality activated by payment, which is interpreted as an expression of the neoliberalization of intimate life and the ascendancy of postfeminist discourse. Although the empirical phenomenon under study may be considered residual, it opens a broader reflection on contemporary heterosexual relations and the socio-political tensions underpinning them.
