Refreshments will be served.\n\nAb stract\n\nAccurate measurement of snowfall can be critical for a wide vari ety of studies including snowpack variability\, hydrology and regional cli mate modelling. Systematic errors in measurements of snow are often observ ed due to the gauge-shield geometry. It is well documented that the catch efficiency of a gauge-shield configuration decreases with increasing wind speed\, with a lot of scatter for a given wind speed. This study will exam ine the causes leading to the scatter in the catch efficiency of snow gaug es at the Marshall Test site near Boulder Colorado. The scatter in the dat a at a given wind speed arises from the variability in\, for example\, the characteristics of snow and turbulence. These key factors were identified using both observations collected in the field and computational fluid dy namics. Preliminary analysis of the relationship among automatic measureme nts of the particle characteristics\, wind speed and the catch efficiency of different gauge shield configurations will be discussed. Overall\, this study contributes to improve our understanding of the variability associa ted with the automatic measurement of solid precipitation.\n DTSTART:20151130T203000Z DTEND:20151130T213000Z LOCATION:Room 934\, Burnside Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B9\, 805 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Seminar: Dr. Julie Theriault URL:/meteo/channels/event/seminar-dr-julie-theriault-2 56924 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
