Behavior\, however\, is more than the catalogue of m otions that an organism can perform. Animals organize their repertoire of actions into sequences and patterns whose underlying dynamics last much lo nger than any particular behavior. How an organism modulates these dynamic s affects its success at accessing food\, reproducing\, and myriad other t asks essential for survival. Animals regulate these patterns of behavior v ia many interacting internal states (hunger\, reproductive cycle\, age\, e tc.) that we cannot directly measure. Studying these hidden states’ dynami cs\, accordingly\, has proven challenging due to a lack of measurement tec hniques and theoretical understanding. In this talk\, I will outline our e fforts to uncover the latent dynamics that underlie long timescale structu re in animal behavior. Looking across a variety of organisms\, we use a no vel methodology to measure animals’ full behavioral repertoires to find th e existence of a non-trivial form of long timescale dynamics that cannot b e explained using standard mathematical frameworks. I will present how tem poral coarse-graining can be used to understand how these dynamics are gen erated and how the found course-grained states can be related to the inter nal states governing behavior through a combination of machine learning te chniques and dynamical systems modeling. Inferring these hidden dynamics p resents a new opportunity to generate insights into the neural and physiol ogical mechanisms that animals use to select actions.\n DTSTART:20210216T170000Z DTEND:20210216T180000Z LOCATION:CA\, QC SUMMARY:QLS Seminar Series - Gordon Berman URL:/qls/channels/event/qls-seminar-series-gordon-berm an-328105 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
