 黑料社\n\nYou may have heard of CERN\, home of the world鈥檚 larg
 est particle collider\, in the news. If not\, you鈥檒l learn about it here! 
 Physicists around the world use the collider at CERN to smash together lar
 ger particles to unleash their innards. The sheer size of the collider is 
 impressive: it鈥檚 the largest man-made machine ever built. Why on Earth do 
 physicists need such a massive machine? This STARS presentation will cover
  how we study the smallest building blocks of matter using the collider an
 d the famous ATLAS experiment (a mammoth in its own right). There will be 
 an accessible introduction to particle physics\, how we detect particles t
 oo small to see\, and why we collide particles. We鈥檒l lead up to talking a
 bout how Canada is helping to build the future of particle physics at the 
 ATLAS experiment at CERN. At the end of the talk\, you will hopefully know
  what the world around us is made of!\n\n\nAbout STARS\n\nSTARS (Scientist
 s Talk About Research for Staff) is a series of special lunch-hour talks a
 nd visits to science related sites and institutes specifically for Faculty
  of Science support staff.\n\nBicentennial STARS for 2021\n\nTo honour McG
 ill's Bicentennial year\, STARS is celebrating聽young 黑料社 scientists wit
 h聽seven monthly lunch-hour presentations that will take you behind the sce
 nes to never before seen labs and experimental research areas where gradua
 te students will share all kinds of insights into their work and research 
 efforts.\n\nThe Bicentennial STARS series will be co-hosted by student amb
 assadors\, Yael and Micaela Lewis\,聽twin sisters in their fifth year of a 
 BSc in Biology\, both minoring in Natural History. Yael and Micaela have b
 een very involved in the 黑料社 Debating Union\, and are excited to bring 
 together their passions for science and communication as student ambassado
