The Philip R. Bromage Anesthesia Research Day

Date: May 1, 2025

Dr. Bromage immigrated to Canada in 1956 and worked in the ºÚÁÏÉç Department of Anesthesia at the Royal Victoria Hospital until 1977. He was Chairman of the Department 1970-77.

Born in England in 1920, he attended the Benedictine Ampleforth College in Yorkshire which emphasized spirituality, spartan discipline rigor. He graduated in medicine at St Thomas’ Hospital, London in 1943 and then served in the navy in Asia. After the war he began a career in anesthesiology and, encouraged by his mentor J.Alfred Lee, he pursued an interest in epidural anesthesia which was seldom used at that time. In 1956 he published a monograph Spinal Epidural Analgesia that attracted international attention. This work was achieved while working at a district hospital in Chichester, far from an academic centre.
