Workshop for Legal Language Professionals – Mastering Context in Canada’s Legal Language Professions: The Tree and the Tuning Fork

In this series of workshops, the Graduate Diploma in Legal Translation at şÚÁĎÉç invites you to discover different dimensions of professions at the crossroad of law and languages. We offer both introductory workshops to key professions, such as legal translation and court interpreting, as well as workshops on highly specialized issues that will better meet the needs of experienced jurilinguists. All workshops are free and open to all.
In workshop 1, the presenter will explore how bilingual legal language professionals from a variety of educational backgrounds and experience pathways can enhance their research skills and make word choices confidently.
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Visualize the Canadian legal system as a branching structure that helps guide context-sensitive translation decisions
- Distinguish between different types of legal reference tools and evaluate their suitability based on the context of the source text
- Apply a vocabulary for talking about legal translation challenges, which can support collaboration, mentorship, or training roles

Francie Gow, traductrice du français Ă l’anglais basĂ©e Ă MontrĂ©al, travaille pour le Bureau de la traduction du gouvernement canadien depuis 2002. Elle est titulaire d’une maĂ®trise en traduction de l’UniversitĂ© d’Ottawa (2003) et d’un BCL/LLB de l’UniversitĂ© şÚÁĎÉç (2008). Son mĂ©moire de maĂ®trise sur l’évaluation des mĂ©moires de traduction lui a valu le Best Thesis Award du Localization Research Centre en 2003. Pendant ses Ă©tudes Ă şÚÁĎÉç, elle a publiĂ© un article sur la protection du contenu des mĂ©moires de traduction par le droit d’auteur dans le Canadian Journal of Law and Technology. Depuis 2020, elle a contribuĂ© Ă mettre au point et Ă offrir de la formation en traduction juridique au Bureau de la traduction en plus de son travail de base en traduction et en rĂ©vision. Elle s’intĂ©resse actuellement Ă cibler les habiletĂ©s spĂ©cifiques permettant Ă des traducteur.trice.s titulaires ou non de diplĂ´mes en droit d’exceller en traduction juridique, en particulier la capacitĂ© Ă dĂ©terminer les bons outils de rĂ©fĂ©rence en contexte (lois bilingues, causes, contrats et traitĂ©s) et Ă accĂ©der Ă ces outils.
